BOAT SHOWS - Sanctuary Cove plans for 2011
A world-record attempt, marine seminars and VIP packages are some of the plans announced for this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show (SCIBS), starting May 19.
SCIBS general manager events and marketing, Sue Thomson, confirmed a range of initiatives for the 23rd annual Show planned for Thursday, May 19 to Sunday, May 22.
“For the first time, Sanctuary Cove welcomes Marine Queensland as host to a daily schedule of fishing and marine talks and seminars,” said Thomson.
Industry and angling experts will present talks and educational sessions on topics encompassing fishing, boat maintenance, trailerboat operation and wider issues in the marine sector. These will be staged at the Marine Village Theatre and in a second venue within the waterfront Marine Village.
In another first, organizers said Queensland Surf Lifesaver, Andrew Abrahams, will attempt to break the world record of one million metres in a rowing machine over five-and-a-half days. His efforts will support the Starlight Foundation, a children’s charity. The Show appearance is a lead-up to his December 2011 marathon attempt to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, a distance of some 2700nm (5000km).
“These initiatives along with the introduction of VIP packages will add further interest for visitors to the Show,” said Thomson.
SCIBS said the
VIP packages introduced in 2011 will include five-star accommodation, helicopter transfers, boat-show entry and a partner pampering package per couple.
“For the serious marine buyer, the Show will continue to attract government delegations and marine businesses eager to see a huge array of marine products and services,” Thomson added.
As at mid-February, the SCIBS said it had attracted more than 280 confirmed exhibitors and more than 20 world and Australian marine product releases.
“Sanctuary Cove is on track to reach its traditional large exhibitor tally of more than 400 national and international exhibitors with more than 100 product launches,” said Thomson.
Marketed as the place “Where the Marine Business Does Business”, SCIBS said it will feature the president of Monte Carlo Yachts, Carla Demaria, as guest speaker at the Australian Marine Industry breakfast staged at the Show on Friday, May 20. Demaria founded Monte Carlo Yachts in Italy, which launched its first model, the Monte Carlo Yachts 76, last September in Europe.
Immediately preceding the Show, Superyacht Australia will stage the first-ever Australian Superyacht and Marine Export Conference on the Gold Coast on May 17 and 18. The conference will provide an overview of key global markets and in particular how Australia, NZ, Asia and the Pacific can work together to drive more business for the region.
“We are confirming exciting new displays virtually daily for the Show,” said Thomson.
In the sailing sector, SCIBS says Hunter Yachts is debuting the Hunter e36 to the Australian market; Seawind will launch in Australia its new Corsair brand with the release of the C37 trimaran; and, Team Windcraft displays the Hanse 355 in a national debut.
SCIBS said a comprehensive range of marine products and services will also be displayed, with electronics, engines, navigational and safety gear, and superyacht services.
According to show organisers, exhibitor Contender Sailcloth, representing Selden Mast, is displaying the Selden Reversible Winch in a national launch, while syndicated yacht ownership company, Yachtshare, will unveil its new Seawind catamaran syndicate.
Icom Australia is releasing its MA-500TR Class B Automatic Identification System (AIS) Transponder and IC-M412 Marine VHF Transceiver, while RWB Marine is showcasing a range of Plastimo products including compasses and water tanks.
“The MarineBusiness-World.com pavilion is fully booked and the Superyacht Australia Pavilion is around 75 per cent booked out,” said Thomson. “On-water and hardstand display bookings are still going strong.”
Club Marine is a confirmed sponsor for the 2011 event. Media partners include Trade-a-Boat, BoatPoint.com.au, Channel 7, 4KQ, and 92.5 Gold FM. Maritime Safety Queensland is a government supporter.
As in past years, visitor tickets can be purchased online. Online ticket prices are $22 one-day adult; $19 one-day concession; $40 two-day adult and $75 four-day adult. Children 14 years and under have free entry. See the website for full terms. Australian Marine Industry Breakfast and VIP package tickets will be available in March.

Selden Mast — Australian launch
Contender Sailcloth, which represents Selden Mast, is unveiling in Australia the Selden Reversible Winch in a national launch. The ingenious feature of the new Selden winches is that the sailor can let the rope out by reversing the winch drum. The purpose-made winch handle has a knob that is pushed down with your thumb to prepare the winch for reverse drive. The winch handle is rotated clockwise and the rope is eased out. The rope remains in the self-tailing jaws all the time, which means it is a one-hand operation to trim the sheet, the halyard or the windward guy. For the family cruising sailor, one-handed operation means safety; no hands are even close to the drum when easing out the rope. In rough conditions, you can hold on with your free hand. Singlehanded sailors can steer and trim at the same time. The unit was awarded overall winner of the coveted DAME Award 2010, which recognises innovation at the Netherlands’ METS trade show. The reversible winch also won the Pittman Innovation Award 2011 in the US. Contact: Jon Kimberley, phone (02) 9997 4099 or visit www.contender.com.au; www.seldenmast.com

Engines and Propulsion
All4Solar — World release
All4Solar presents the world launch of the Aquawatt, the world’s most powerful electric outboard motor. All4Solar’s Dominic de Vries said the engine offers a unique and advanced environmentally-friendly electric drive producing an output of 30hp. Aquawatt motors are built in Austria, where restrictions to use petrol engines on lakes have led to an increasing demand of advanced electric boat engines. The new 30hp engine can achieve speeds of more than 50kmh (28kts) with a 4m boat. de Vries said Aquawatt engines (both inboard and outboard) are based on reliable AC motors, which produce a high thrust and operate almost maintenance free. de Vries said electric motor advantages include avoidance of greenhouse or poisonous gas emissions, while improvements with battery technology allows for use of motors for longer distances including the combination of a solar system and diesel generator.

Cummins
Cummins is displaying the 480hp QSB5.9, the 600hp QSC8.3 and the 715hp QSM11 Zeus models at Sanctuary Cove. The company will be promoting the fact that these three Zeus models are available in triple and quadruple configurations. The new engines and multiple configurations mean the Zeus 3000 series technology, complete with joystick control, autopilot and Skyhook station keeping, covers a range from a total installed power of 710hp (2 x 355hp QSB5.9) through to a whopping 2860hp (4 x 715hp QSM11). Engine ranges thus can be applicable for small sportsfish boats and cruisers up to fast yachts approaching 100ft. The company has also added to its Zeus 3000 series lineup with an expansion to include the GSM 11-litre engines at 715hp, currently Cummins MerCruiser Diesel’s (CMD) largest and most powerful engine. CMD has an innovative Zeus pod-drive system, which offers the best features of inboards with the benefit of joystick control at slow speeds. The joystick controls the drive-by-wire steering, throttle and shifting in an intuitive manner, so simple hand movements are translated into vectored thrust and complex boat manoeuvres. Zeus pods are tunnel mounted, so the pods are largely shielded from debris in the water by the hull of the boat. Flexiteek Oceania
Flexiteek Oceania has enjoyed a huge increase in business since establishing in Australia seven years ago. The company’s Paul Enders describes Sanctuary Cove as “incredibly important” to the company’s sales and marketing. Attendance at the 2009 Show generated sales and leads, which accounted for 58 per cent of total Australian sales during that calendar year. The company’s participation as an exhibitor in 2010 has led to more than 60 per cent of total Australian sales. The synthetic and heat-welded materials can produce a strong and watertight panel, which can be used on decking. The synthetic product is UV stable, comes with a five-year warranty and offers advantages over traditional teak, which can colour and split over time. Flexiteek is sold in more than 40 countries. Icom (Australia)
Icom Australia is releasing the MA-500TR Class B Automatic Identification System (AIS) Transponder and the IC-M412 Marine VHF Transceiver. The MA-500TR offers a cost-effective entry option into chartplotting. AIS is an automated tracking system used by ships, marine emergency service organisations and other maritime bodies. It allows vessel positions and courses to be displayed graphically on-screen and provides important information such as MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) numbers, speeds and vessel names. The MA-500TR unit features one depth for 30 minutes water ingress protection and is made in Japan to strict quality standards. As a transponder rather than a receiver, it also sends out the user’s information, which allows a vessel to be visible to other vessels. A GPS receiver is included in the box, while the unit features a full dot-matrix display. The exhibitor is also showcasing the IC-M412 Marine VHF Transceiver. This supersedes the IC-M411 model and can integrate with Icom’s MA-500TR AIS Transponder. This unit can continually monitor Channel 16 while scanning in the event that a distress call comes through. The DSC-enabled VHF radio is important for water safety as many Australian marine rescue organisations use DSC to monitor coastal activity. A total of 100 MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity) numbers can be programmed into the transceiver. For more info, see www.icom.net.au
