NEWS - SYDNEY HARBOUR WHARF-MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS AWARDED

Two Australian-owned companies, Waterway Constructions Maintenance and Sydney Marina Contracting, have been awarded contracts for the upkeep of wharf structures on Sydney Harbour, including Circular Quay and King Street Wharf.

NSW Ports and Waterways Paul McLeay announced the contractors as part of a $4.2 million budget for Sydney Harbour wharf-structure maintenance.

“Wharf structures are continually subjected to the harsh marine environment of sun, wind and waves,” says McLeay. “Their ongoing maintenance is an important role for NSW Maritime.

“Monthly inspections of wharves are conducted in conjunction with Sydney Ferries and maintenance contractors to ensure their safety and integrity.

“Sydney Ferries alone carry more than 14 million passengers a year, so it’s easy to see how vital it is to ensure the integrity of this important transport infrastructure,” he said.

Waterway Constructions Maintenance of Rozelle, and Sydney Marina Contracting of Pyrmont, have both been awarded two three-year contracts for the repair and upkeep of everything from piles and deck to ramps and shelter structures.

KEY FACTS

* NSW Maritime manages the maintenance of more than 100 marine structures on Sydney Harbour, including 49 commuter wharves and 22 charter vessel wharves.

* Emergency repairs are carried out within three hours and urgent works have a 24-hour turnaround.

* Waterway Constructions Maintenance has two contracts for: The maintenance of all major wharves on the Harbour, including emergency maintenance; and, secondary wharves east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

* Sydney Marina Contracting has two contracts for: The maintenance of secondary wharves west of the Harbour Bridge; and, maintaining minor wharf structures and jetties on the Harbour.
