SPORT -BUTLERS ROUND LORD HOWE ISLAND YACHT RACE IN 2010

The Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is running the Butlers Round Lord Howe Island Yacht Race, starting on Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 9) in 2010.

At 770 nautical miles, the race will be the longest Cat 1 race in Australia… 140nm longer than the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

The racing division will sail non-stop, rounding the island then heading straight back to the finish in
Newcastle Harbour. Meanwhile, entrants in the cruising division will enjoy a lay-over of up to six days awaiting suitable weather for the return.

Both yachts and multihulls are welcome to compete, fully crewed or short-handed – IRC and PHS systems will determine handicap honours.

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club (NCYC) members Tony Purkiss and Bruce Bragg conceived the race concept and secured a keen sponsor in Butlers Business and Law, and club backing.
