NEWS - Mustang Builds in Philippines
The boat took five months to build and will be shipped to its new owner in Thailand, said AMAC managing director, Henry Co, who is the Chairman of Ford Group Philippines and involved in strategic issues related to regional free trade agreements.
The 2800 Sports Cruiser is a 28-footer pleasure boat powered by a MerCruiser 260hp 5.0L MPI petrol engine with Bravo 3 sterndrive. The boat reportedly hit a top speed of 30.4 knots during sea trails on local waters.
Mustang Marine general manager Chris Heaton reportedly witnessed the trials and checked everything. He was very impressed by the quality of the boat, the Business Mirror said.
Tradeaboat was told during a press conference at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in late May that the 2850 would be built in the Philippines. The boat will sell for about $135,000 when (updated 11/7/09) it’s released at the end of the year.
It’s first new Sports Cruiser model and one of the smallest boats built under the Mustang brand. Yet the pocket Sports Cruiser has been described as a liveable boat with superb craftsmanship and elegant designs found in its kitchen, toilet, bedroom and lounge.
Credited with getting car manufacturing rolling in the Philippines, Co said the production of the first boat took quite a long time but by the end of the year “we will gear up to about two to three units a month of this size.”
The new Mustang is being touted as a big step in free port Subic Bay Free Port’s bid to become a maritime hub in the Southeast Asia.
