NEWS - Budget Boost to Boating Facilities in NSW
Ports and Waterways Minister Joe Tripodi said the State boating regulator NSW Maritime will invest $24.76 million in its capital program for 2009-10, a 32 per cent increase on the 2008-09 Budget.
“Many of NSW Maritime’s big ticket items will be in Sydney, including an investment of $8.537 million in the Sydney Harbour commuter wharf upgrade program,” Mr Tripodi said.
“This will go towards improving berthing efficiency and safety as well as commuter amenities such as disability access at commuter wharves around Sydney Harbour.”
Mr Tripodi said another $4.248 million would be used to upgrade and maintain facilities at Circular Quay while $1.2 million will fund a heavy-duty commercial boat ramp as part of the Rozelle Bay maritime precinct redevelopment.
“Following the announcement of successful proponents, work is now well underway on a number of projects in the Rozelle precinct including Sydney City Marine – Sydney’s state-of-the-art boat repair facility under the western approach to the Anzac Bridge,” Mr Tripodi said.
Recreational boating infrastructure across the State is set to receive another boost with the Budget providing $5 million each year for the next five years under the Better Boating Program.
Better Boating will take effect from 1 July 2009 and will consolidate several infrastructure grant schemes managed by NSW Maritime.
Since 1998, NSW Maritime has awarded more than $19 million in similar grants where local councils or clubs are provided with funding on a 50:50 basis.
Mr Tripodi said Sydney Harbour boaters would also benefit from the construction of two vessel pump-out facilities at a cost of $1.05 million.
“These free facilities will be welcomed by boat owners who have an important role to play in preventing pollution in Sydney Harbour, particularly when it comes to the disposal of vessel waste.”
Other NSW Maritime projects for 2009-10 include:
• $550,000 for redevelopment of the former Balls Head Coal Loader at Waverton to provide public access and maritime infrastructure and services for the boating community;
• $250,000 for redevelopment of Homebush Bay West including improved access to waterways and improved maritime infrastructure;
• $400,000 for purchase and fit out of a regional service centre at Tamworth.
