Our Sailing Legends

HAPPY DAYS - Our Sailing Legends

Brought together by the legendary Commodore R.A.Dickson in the 1960s, the Norske crew pictured above in Sydney Harbour’s Division 1 racing are now “The Old Warriors” of Sydney.

In their 60’s and 70’s, they have been together for over 40 years competing against and with each other in many sports. Between them they have over a 1,000 Representative and first Grade Rugby games, dozens of Americas Cup races, Kings Cup and surf boat rowing campaigns, surfing and over 60 Sydney to Hobart yacht races,

As one member of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron said “These guys are legends. On Saturday they race hard and play hard. Most Saturday afternoons we have to send the last tender out to bring them back to the club.”

They also have put back into the sports they love. This includes mentoring/coaching the next generations of champions or directing the evolution of their sports at the highest levels. Included here are the Presidency of the Australian Yachting Federation, president and committee men of Australian Rugby Union, NSW Rugby Union and local rugby clubs, Commodore and committee men of the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron and many more. They also compete in masters competitions at national and world levels.

One, who has been an insulin dependant diabetic for over 40 years, recently raised $16,100 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in a one day 160km bike ride through the Claire Valley.

These old Warriors never stop, they just get a little slower.
