READER YARN: Beware the Stowaways!
We were late arriving at Appletree Bay in Cowan Creek, Sydney, on Thursday evening before Easter and rigged our trailer sailer, a Sabre called Rattling, under the National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) light on their building, We then towed Rattling to the far end of the carpark for a quiet night/early start.
As we left the boat to go for a walk before going to sleep there was a possum hanging around the trailer. I shooed it up a tree. When we arrived back at Rattling there was this lovely little chap sitting on the centreboard case. It went up into the v berth (photo) then under the cockpit and could not even be seen.
We went to bed hoping the possum would find its way out. It did, but returned three times (twice with its mate) to have a feed! We ended up having to close up the whole boat to keep out these unwitting crew.
The NPWS officer was not impressed when she discovered that we had spent the night 'camping' on the hard in the National Park. So wet set off for Easter, as happy as a possum up a gum tree or in a trailer sailer. - Richard and Rosie Robson, Rattling.
