Kiwis Race for Hamo

Jim Farmer, who is no newcomer to Race Week, has entered his impressive Farr 43 design, Georgia. On one occasion he had legendary America’s Cup skipper Russell Coutts as a member of his crew for the week.

What was until recently New Zealand’s largest resident supermaxi, Zana, is also an early entry for Race Week. She has been purchased by Sydneysider Peter Millard and is about to undergo a development program which has Hamilton Island as a major target. Zana is expected to be renamed before she starts her east coast campaign.

Another Sydney yachtsman leaving no doubt about his intentions when it comes to Race Week is Steven David. He won the IRC Grand Prix division two years ago and is determined to get back to the top this year with his canting keel 60-footer, Wild Joe.

Organisers are impressed by the rapid rate that entries are coming in via the Race Week website (www.hamiltonislandraceweek.com.au) even though there are still five months to go until the start of competition. It appears that many are saying, ‘It’s time to enjoy life. Let’s go sailing at Race Week!’

Race Week is Australia’s most awarded keelboat regatta and biggest offshore classic. In 2008 it attracted a record fleet of 225 for its 25th anniversary event.

Among the many highlights planned for this year’s Race Week will be the official opening of both the Hamilton Island Yacht Club and Hamilton Island Golf Club, two magnificent facilities that will bring new spheres of excellence and enjoyment to what is already a superb tropical island resort destination.

The Audi Hamilton Island Race Week website is now open: www.hamiltonislandraceweek.com.au
